Seed and seedling traits of common restoration species 2020
Chicago Botanic Garden

Ecology, Reproductive Biology, Fieldwork, Labwork, Plant Traits

During a restoration, practitioners and researchers want to assess which species are emerging at the restoration site. However, species can be difficult to distinguish, especially in their seedling stages, as many species tend to look alike! This project will involve growing, measuring, and photographing seedlings from species commonly used restoration, as well as common weeds that occur in restoration sites. The goals of the project will include studying within and between species traits in closely related restoration species. Furthermore, the project will include developing a key to these seedlings, and testing its use in field restorations.
