Population genetics of Impatiens endemic to Tanzania's Eastern Arc 2023
Chicago Botanic Garden

Genetics, Population Biology, Labwork

The Eastern Arc is a chain of mountains in Tanzania and Kenya that are home to over 536 endemic plant and 100 endemic animal species. With over 40 taxa (species and subspecies) endemic to the EAM—more than any other plant genus—Impatiens (in the Balsam family), is a fascinating plant group to explore evolution in this important biodiversity area. This summer we will work on the population genetics of 3 Eastern Arc endemic Impatiens using a genomic dataset. Interns will gain experience using bioinformatics programs and tools, and will gain some experience in wet lab techniques.
